Since its founding, UCCA has produced a hundred books documenting and expanding on its exhibitions. This publication history includes landmark exhibition catalogues that have been recognized around the world as valuable resources on Chinese contemporary art, such as ’85 New Wave: The Birth of Chinese Contemporary Art and On | Off: China’s Young Artists in Concept & Practice. Artist monographs feature prominently in UCCA’s roster, contributing to the scholarly conversation around dozens of artists from China and abroad, including Cao Fei, Olafur Eliasson, Elmgreen & Dragset, Huang Yong Ping, William Kentridge, Maria Lassnig, Liu Wei, Liu Xiaodong, Henri Matisse, Elizabeth Peyton, Pablo Picasso, Qiu Zhijie, Sterling Ruby, Wang Xingwei, Andy Warhol, Xu Zhen, Yu Hong, Zeng Fanzhi, and Zhao Gang. Exploring the exhibition catalogue as an aesthetic object has also been a consistent theme, inspiring projects such as the seven-volume “The Los Angeles Project” series of artist books. Other catalogues, including Duchamp and/or/in China and Rauschenberg in China, have won national and international design competitions.
