Born in Hong Kong in 1966, Yu Lik-wai is a renowned filmmaker and photographer who lives and works in Beijing. During his 18-year career as a cinematographer, he has collaborated with many filmmakers, including renowned art house director Jia Zhangke. In addition to his filmmaking work, Yu has also experimented with photography, video, and installation.
Yu’s artistic projects negotiate the relationship between the stillness of photography and its implied narrative. Drawing inspiration from sources as diverse as film noir and psychoanalysis, Yu’s artworks explore urban spaces and the psychological weight endowed upon them by the viewer.
In this lecture, UCCA invites the artist to discuss his practice in photography, video installation, and film. After the lecture, UCCA will screen Yu’s film All Tomorrow’s Parties.
