UCCA Art Cinema present Story of Film: An Odyssey, an epic 15-part, 900-minute worldwide guided tour of the greatest movies ever made! The film is made over five years on six continents, covering 12 decades and a thousand films. Based on award-winning Mark Cousin's book of the same name, the film explores to story of cinematic innovation and how film-makers are influenced both by the historical events of their times, and by each other. It spans from the first steps of silent cinema, the emergence of Hollywood and the star system, to the artistic evolution of film in Russia, Japan, Germany, France, Italy, Britain, Scandinavia and the USA.

Interviewees include filmmaker Alexander Sokurov, Tian Zhuangzhuang, Tsai Ming-liang, Gus Van Sant, Lars Von Trier, Win Wenders, Abbas Kiarostami, Bernardo Bertolucci, Ken Loach, Jane Campion and many more.

Mark Cousins will present the first two hours of Story of Film: An Odyssey at UCCA and the whole series will be screened in May. (nationwide premier)

Mark Cousins is a Northern Irish writer, film critic and director. His short documentary films are The Psychology of Neo-Nazism: Another Journey by Train to Auschwitz (co-director, 93), I Know Where I’m Going! Revisited (94), Cinema Iran (05) and First Impressions (08). His feature documentaries are The New Ten Commandments (co-director, 08), The First Movie (09) and The Story of Film (11).

UK Now is the largest ever festival of British arts and creative industries to take place in China. Coinciding with the London Olympics and the 40th anniversary of China-UK Ambassadorial relations, the Festival will bring British and Chinese arts institutions, artists and art lovers closer together. In collaboration with British Council, Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) will present a series of art experience events in music, architecture, design, visual art, dance, literature and film.
