UCCA, LEAP magazine, and China Independent Film Archive (CIFA) present a special screening of Three Sisters followed by a Q&A with director Wang Bing.
Three Sisters was filmed in a village in northeast Yunnan, and treats the lives of three sisters struggling to get by without parents or other support. The film won the Venice Horizons Awards at the Venice Film Festival in 2012.
Wang Bing was born in Shaanxi Province, China. He studied at the LuXun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang, as well as at the Beijing Film Academy. His first documentary feature, the nine hour-long Tie Xi Qu: West of the Tracks, won him great international acclaim. His other films include Fengming: A Chinese Memoire; short film Brutality Factory; A Journal of Crude Oil; Coal Money; The Ditch; Man with No Name; and Three Sisters.
Film critic and curator, Zhang Yaxuan has been engaging with Chinese independent film since 2000. She is a contributor to various magazines and publications; organizes domestic and international film festivals; and is involved in numerous international exchange programs. Zhang has also been involved in the production of independent films. In 2008 she co-founded CIFA (China Independent Film Archive), and has been developing its reach ever since.
LEAP is the number one Chinese contemporary art magazine, a bimonthly Chinese-English publication with global distribution. China Independent Film Archive (CIFA) is a non-profit organization devoted to the presentation and preservation of Chinese independent film. It was founded in Beijing in 2008 and became a completely independent organization in 2010. CIFA also develops international film exchange programs.
Since its founding, CIFA has worked with numerous film, arts, and educational institutions in different countries to curate and develop film projects. With these projects, CIFA aims at developing a self-distribution network that extends beyond national boundaries.
