About This Program

Cambodian cinema flourished in 1960s, drawing huge crowds to theaters around the country until the Khmer Rouge destroyed the industry in 1975. Nearly 400 films were made in Phnom Penh between 1960 and 1975, only 30 of which survive today. The Khmer Rouge either burnt them or allowed them to decay along with many of the country’s studios and cinemas. Most of those in the film industry were victims of the ensuing genocide.

In his film Golden Slumbers, director Davy Chou, the grandson of one of the most important film producers of this “Golden Age” of Cambodian cinema, reconstructs the country’s cinematographic legacy.

The UCCA Selects series showcases the most recent Chinese art films and productions from overseas. Each month, the program focuses on one documentary and one dramatic film.
