ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

Just in time for winter, UCCA presents another series of fun seasonal-themed art workshops designed to help children acquire a greater appreciation for contemporary art and increase their artistic and aesthetic awareness. Join us for this journey through winter with some of the world’s greatest artists!

Workshop Description: One of the most well-known poems about Chinese New Year (and Chinese New Year fireworks!) was written by Wang Anshi (1021-1086) the famous Song Dynasty statesman and poet. Have you ever read Wang Anshi’s immortal words about the popping of firecrackers outside and the warm feelings people get when celebrating the New Year with their family and friends? In this special holiday edition of the UCCA-Creative Studio Children’s Workshop, we’ll learn all about Chinese New Year celebrations and fireworks, and even make some firecracker-shaped decorations to brighten up your house for the Chinese New Year!

Workshop Objectives: Gain a basic understanding of gunpowder, one of the “Four Great Chinese Inventions”; learn about Chinese New Year’s customs including the Dragon Dance, giving cash in red envelopes, setting off firecrackers, and pasting up New Year’s couplets and folk art paintings; learn about some of Cai Guoqiang’s exciting artworks involving gunpowder and fireworks.

Materials (will be provided): Cardboard tubes, acrylic paint, sequins, rope and string.
