ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

In UCCA’s second lecture on Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Wu Fei, an associate professor of philosophy at Peking University, will focus on Hamlet's famous saying: "To be or not to be." According to some scholars, this is not only the most famous saying by William Shakespeare, but also the most well-known saying in world literature. It reflects the personality of Hamlet, but also relates to the most profound issue in Western philosophy: Being. Wu Fei will discuss how to understand this saying in light of Shakespeare’s play and in relation to the common spiritual dilemmas of modernity.
