Quilt-making has always been an important American tradition. Quilts can tell a variety of stories, from the personal to the national. Each quilt is as unique as its maker—each with its own individual story, distinctive style, and specific purpose. In this workshop, American master quiltmaker Edna J. Patterson-Petty will guide kids in a group discussion, jotting down thoughts, words, and shapes that come to mind when they think of themselves. Each child will then turn their musings into their own little quilt patch using cloth, buttons, beads, and other materials.

Edna J. Patterson-Petty has quilted all her life. As a child, she helped her mother prepare cloth for a bed quilt, learning to cut waist-bands and rip seams from worn pants and skirts and cut the unworn sections for quilts. As a teen, she learned to sew on a machine her grandfather provided. As a young wife and mother, she made much of her family’s clothing. Years later, as a college student, Patterson-Petty saved fabric samples from an art class and created her first original art quilt.
