ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

In 2005, British backpacker and creative entrepreneur Dominic started Plastered T-shirts on Nan Luo Gu Xiang, a quiet hutong (traditional Beijing alleyway.) By taking iconic Chinese imagery and placing it on t-shirts, he created a clothing brand that China could call its own. After a few years, the brand developed into a true Chinese street brand, and Plastered products were selling out of shops in Singapore, the US, the UK and six locations around China.

The Plastered concept store opened on Beijing’s Nan Luo Gu Xiang hutong in 2006. That same year, Plastered hosted China’s first-ever “hutong catwalk show.” It was a celebration of beautiful design in a truly cutting-edge venue: models walked the length of the cobblestone alleyway against a backdrop of traditional Chinese courtyard homes, and lighting was provided by a mix of Chinese lanterns and glittering disco balls. The show was a massive success and propelled the brand into the international media spotlight: Plastered appeared in Vogue, Elle, City Pictorial, and over 20 television features. The second hutong show drew double the crowd as the buzz grew about this t-shirt company that was doing something ground-breaking for Chinese fashion.

In this latest edition of the UCCA-0086 Magazine Love Brands Series, Dominic Johnson-Hill – creative entrepreneur and founder of Plastered T-shirts – will share stories from the Plastered brand with UCCA audiences.
