About the Film

The Cherry Orchard

Director: Adolf Shapiro

Leading actor: Renata Litvinova

Type: Stage play

Country: Russia

Time: 166 min

First produced in 1904 at the Moscow Art Theatre under the direction of Konstantin Stanislavsky, this production of Anton Chekhov’s classic tale of cultural futility, starring Russian stage and screen legend Renata Litvinova, is more relevant today than it was over a hundred years ago. Adolf Shapiro’s interpretation asks the question: where would the characters of this play live today years after their cherry orchard has been cut down? The answer, which lies in the material world created by set designer, David Borovsky, is, of course, on the stage. A century later, this production brings The Cherry Orchard full circle, with its wandering band of characters never at peace, but finally back home.

She Loves Me

Director: Scott Ellis

Starring: Laura Benanti, Jane Krakowski, Zachary Levi

Genre: Musical

Country: US

Duration: 133 min, no interview, no intermission

She Loves Me is a story that begins between two perfume store employees: they seem to rub each other the wrong way at every turn. Little do they know, they are each the pen pal the other has long been in love with. When the truth is revealed, will their love survive? This musical premiered on Broadway in 1963. The director for this revival of She Loves Me is eight-time Tony Awards Best Director nominee, Scott Ellis. Tony Award winning Laura Benanti and Jane Krakowski, Olivier Award winning Gavin Creel, and Chuck actor Zachary Levi all star in this production. During the 2016 Tony Awards, She Loves Me received 8 nominations, including Best Director, Best Lead Actress in a Musical, Best Lead Actor in a Musical, and Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and ultimately winning Best Scenic Design in a Musical. The production was praised by the Drama Desk Awards, Drama League Awards, and Outer Critics Circle Awards.

The Winter’s Tale

Director: Kenneth Branagh

Starring: Kenneth Branagh, Judi Dench, Hadley Fraser

Genre: Stage play

Country: United Kingdom

Duration: 185 min

The Winter’s Tale is directed by Kenneth Branagh, who was nominated for Best Director at the 1989 Oscars. Branagh also plays King of Sicily Leontes in this production. 80-year old veteran of theatre Judi Dench plays Paulina, a noblewoman of Sicily. Dench won Best Actress in a Supporting Role for this production at the 2016 Laurence Olivier Awards, while Branagh was nominated for Best Actor. As one of Shakespeare’s later and most successful works, The Winter’s Tale tells the story of Leontes, who has everything a man could want: power, wealth, a loving family and friends. But jealousy makes him tear his happy family apart, leading to years of guilt. Finally, he pays his debts and is reconciled with his loving wife, Hermione.
