The Yellow Handkerchief is a 1977 Japanese film directed by Yoji Yamada. It was the winner of the first Best Picture award at the Japan Academy Prize and tells a story of a spontaneous road trip made by three strangers. Kinya, who just bought a new red car meets Akemi (Kaori Momoi), a cute, young woman. They later meet Yusaku (Ken Takakura), an introverted, middle-aged man that joins them. Yusaku reveals that he's just been released from prison for murder. He then begins to open up to Kinya and Akemi about his past, particularly about his ex-wife Mitsue (Chieko Baisho) and their bittersweet relationship. The two then help Yusaku seek closure by escorting him to his old home where his ex-wife has been instructed to leave a yellow handkerchief outside if she still wants him back.
