In 2008, Living Dance Studio presented their piece “Memory,” a collection of personal memories from the Cultural Revolution. After completing this piece, they wanted to continue focusing on these “amnesiac” periods in Chinese history, letting dormant memories surface again. Two years later, they will debut the second piece in the ‘Memory’ series, covering the Great Famine from 1959-1961.
The piece is based on the expansive Folk Memory Documentary Project. The project called on over 20 volunteers to act as “history seekers.” They visited dozens of villages in 10 provinces, interviewing over two hundred “witnesses to history.”Their interviewees are the living history of the Great Famine, and they join them onstage via videos taken during the project.
Participants in the project include documentary filmmakers, dancers, stage technicians, students, and even villagers who lived through the famine themselves. Most of them were born after 1980 and had little to no understanding of the famine before embarking on the project. On August 31st and September 1st, they will tell the story of their project and reflect on this forgotten history.
