In collaboration with emerging director Zheng Jie, UCCA presents “Supper,” an experimental dance performance, on July 29, 2017. Inspired by the vivid depiction of 12 disciples’ mental states at the last supper in the Bible, the performance takes "observation" as the starting point to engage with the words and behavior of the people, exploring mental imagery and representation. The work is divided into three acts: "Id", "Mirror Image," and "Beings.” Through the solo dance, "Id" presents the confusion of self-seeking. In "Mirror Image", the eyes of the dancers were deliberately stimulated to release tears while cutting the onion, which arouses the girl's true spiritual experience. As argued by Arthur Schepenhauer in The World as Will and Representation, others are also the projection of self. We are different, yet similar. We are sometimes surprised at the commonality we share while also confused at the differences we have. Things in the universe are "beings". There are countless similar but unfamiliar "I"s who seem cold and ruthless. Everyone is wearing masks. We are temptation itself, but also are being tempted. In the performance, there will be two dancers in a tug of war and wrestling. Through this experimental exploration, “Supper” seeks to understand the perplexing and everchanging representations and mental imageries that marks the contemporary society.
