Legendary American publication The New Yorker is iconic both in word and image – but when was photography introduced to the magazine? Having now worked with hundreds of celebrated artists and photographers, co-curators of Beyond Words: Photography in The New Yorker, Elisabeth Biondi and Cay Sophie Rabinowitz discuss how this marriage of text and visuals came about, how it has evolved and how audiences in Beijing can enjoy the first China-based incarnation of this exhibition. Moderated by New Yorker China correspondent, Evan Osnos.

Elisabeth Biondi is Visuals Editor at The New Yorker where she has helped to shape the magazine’s acclaimed reputation for photography. Formerly Head of Photography at Stern, she has worked with photographers from around the world and numerous other publications, including Vanity Fair. In 2004 she served as Chair of the Judges of the World Press Photo Awards.

Cay Sophie Rabinowitz is a contemporary art writer, curator, and educator, based mostly in New York and sometimes in Berlin. She became well-known and respected as the Senior Editor of Parkett and Artistic Director of Art Basel. After almost a decade of service to Parsons The New School for Design’s graduate program of photography, she recently moved on to teach in the MFA program at Columbia University. Among the many international exhibitions and programs of contemporary art, she co-curated the 2nd Athen’s Biennale and a number of projects for Art Production Fund Lab in New York. She is cofounder and Editor of Fantom, a quarterly of photography, and In 2011 Ms. Rabinowitz launched together with designer Sofia Sizzi the brand Giulietta, applying her extensive background in art to a fashion context.

Evan Osnos came to China in 2005 and joined The New Yorker as a staff writer in 2008. His articles for The New Yorker have focused on such diverse topics as China’s young neoconservatives, the rise and fall of a tycoon, the influx of African migrants, and the life of China's top-ranked boxer. Osnos was previously the Beijing bureau chief for the Chicago Tribune, where he contributed to a series that won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting. Before his appointment to China, he worked in the Middle East, reporting mainly from Iraq.
