ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

Song Kun (b. 1977, Baotou, Inner Mongolia), is one of China’s most prominent young female artists. She paints with a kind of wistful desire, as the figures portrayed in her works seem to hover in a dream world both familiar and fantastic. Song Kun uses her unique vision language to express the concern and expectation to daily life, meanwhile, she also explores to use more art forms for artistic creation. In “A Thousand Kisses Deep,” Song Kun’s works are shimmering technical studies of drifting light that explore a sinister, sensual beauty.

In this smart artists’ talk series, Song Kun and her husband Chen Mulian will explore the various possibilities of artwork creation and production across different mediums. The audience is welcome to bring musical instruments, their smart phones, iPads, or anything which produces sound, to collaborate with the artists on an impromptu, real-time live performance.

ABOUT OUR GUESTS

Guests: Song Kun (UCCA exhibiting artist), Chen Mulian (electronic musician and multimedia artist)

Song Kun (b. 1977, Baotou, Inner Mongolia) was a founding member of the artist group N12 during her studies, where she Song Kun and other 11 young and ambitious artists who also graduated from Central Academy of Fine Arts, will hold an exhibition of their works every year.

As a member of the generation of art students formally trained in a rapidly developing environment, Song’s nostalgic obsession with the commonplace sets her work apart from the political, contemporary pop art of her peers, as her oeuvre reveals subtle criticisms and a muted mourning for something lost.

Chen Mulian is a Beijing-based electronic musician and multimedia artist. His works take multiple forms, including electronic music, sound, video, installation art and concert pieces. He has produced numerous original compositions for indie films, animations and commercial brands. His music works incorporate a unique mix of ambient, Eastern and post-rock influences. Video pieces use original recordings but appear atmospherically detached, and use psychological suggestion to unify sound and image. In addition, he founded the art group “Ache” in 2008. In 2011, he co-founded “Xuan Yin” lab, and began to organize and plan events and concerts aimed at broader cultural exchange.
