One of Chilean cinemas prominent figures, Patricio Guzmán adeptly combines riveting cinematography with power political messages. In 2015, his documentary The Pearl Button, a film denouncing the genocide suffered by the Chilean indigenous people and the crimes of the Pinochet dictatorship, won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the Berlinale. His first documentary, The Battle of Chile (1973) has been recognized by the press as "one of the ten best political films in the world" and is widely considered a unique work in the history of cinematography.

UCCA's retrospective, organized with the Embassy of Chile in Beijing, includes the documentaries The Battle of Chile, Nostalgia for the Light, and The Pearl Button with an opening by Patricio Guzmán and a roundtable discussion between the director and several Chinese filmmakers. China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) and Beijing International Tourism TUMEI are sponsors.

Patricio Guzmán (Documentary Director)

After the coup in Chile led by Augusto Pinochet in 1973, Patricio Guzmán remained in the National Stadium of Santiago city threatened with execution for two weeks. He left his country in November 1973. He has lived in Cuba, Spain, and France, where he currently resides. He is founder of the Documentary Festival of Santiago.

Six of his works have premiered at Cannes, including The Battle of Chile and Nostalgic of the Light. In 2013 he was invited to join the Academy of Hollywood. His trilogy The Battle of Chile is considered one of the best documentaries ever made.
