Outsiders of Life’s Feast

2017.6.24
14:00-16:00

Performing Arts
Location:  Nave

As part of a public program series in conjunction with UCCA’s ongoing exhibition “The New Normal: China, Art, and 2017,” artists Liang Ban and Bella Dong present a special sound project titled “Outsiders of Life’s Feast,” in the Pavilion of Exception (Nave) from 2 to 4pm on 24 June 2017. Organized by Liang and Dong, a group of performers will put on an improvised dance performance in the Pavilion of Exception, each responding to the sound in their headphone with their body. The performance will transform the Pavilion into an engrossing sound stadium, where the wandering performers and audiences are invited into an estranged world utterly outside of life’s feast.

Liang Ban’s fascination with sound is also reflected in his sound installation A Poet Who Never Saw the Ocean Wrote a Novel about the Ocean, currently on view in “The New Normal: China, Art, and 2017.” Liang Ban invited friends to record the sound of waves at various beaches across Greece, ItaIy, Spain, and the Balkan Peninsula. The beaches were those where a massive influx of refugees landed most frequently since 2015, including Kos, Greece, and Sardinia, Italy, among others. As the audience walks through the long corridor that houses his work, they are surrounded by the sounds of waves amplified and blended together, seemingly allowing some therefore become inscrutable, subtly allowing some vague, indelible feeling to permeate the nebulous space. Removed from the historical event itself, the sound of the waves collides with the reality of our moment.
