How is the modern voice of the Chinese composer heard through instruments rooted in national tradition? Established composer-pianist Gao Ping, with roots in China, America, and New Zealand, and emerging composers Jia Yao and Wang Yaming, as well as a vocal work by Huang Ruo.
The program includes both vocal and instrumental music, and also includes China premieres of Huang Ruo’s Second Breath, a Buddhist chant-inspired aria premiered in 2012 at New York’s National Opera Center, and Gao Ping’sFive Impressions, premiered at New York’s Lincoln Center in the same year.
