Respect films, respect directors: this is the mission of Heaven Pictures, which just celebrated its 3rd anniversary. Since their first investment in young director Hao Jie's film Single Man in 2010, Heaven Pictures has collaborated with an growing number of cutting-edge directors, supporting freedom of expression in the art of film. Each of their films is a brave exploration of contemporary Chinese society, probing questions that more commercial films cannot. UCCA Art Cinema is proud to present "New Films from Heaven Pictures,” featuring 5 new works from the art-house distribution company: Fly with the Crane (Li Ruijun), Don't Expect Praises (Yang Jin), The Love Songs of Tiedan (Hao Jie), The Cremator (Peng Tao), and Emperor Visits the Hell (Li Luo), along with a special screening of Pema Tseden’s The Silent Holy Stones.
Aside from post-screening Q&A sessions with the directors, UCCA has organized a special forum on August 10th, with general manager of Heaven Pictures, Yang Yang; director Li Ruijun; veteran producer Nai An; program manager of Broadway Cinematheque, Yang Cheng; and director of UCCA Art Cinema Xie Meng. They will discuss issues of investment, production, and distribution as well as the challenges facing Chinese art-house cinema.
