To encourage collaborations among filmmakers across the Asia-pacific region, Lantern Cine-Club and Blackfin Media collaborates with the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) to present the new screening series “New Asian Scenery,” opening with Turah — the first feature film by Indonesian filmmmaer Wicaksono Wisnu Legowo. Legowo takes his inspiration from villagers living in squatter settlememnts in Tegal, Central Java. Featuring actors, both professional and amateur, speaking in their native language, Turah paints an authentic picture of the struggles of the lower class amidst the corruption and indifference of the privileged upper class.

The residents of Kampung Tirang live in dilapidated shacks, earning just enough for their next meal. The hardworking and reliable Turah has been appointed by the cooperative leader to tend to complaints or settle conflicts that arise in the village. Peace in the settlement is disrupted when the alcoholic Jadag starts questioning the governance of the village. His accusations towards the leaders soon land both Turah and the whole village into further chaos.

Wicaksono Wisnu Legowo

Wicaksono Wisnu Legowo (b. 1983) is an Indonesian filmmaker from Tegal, Central Java. Legowo studied film at the Jakarta Institute of Arts. His first short film Tobong (2006) won a special award at the Indonesian Film Festival. Turah is his first feature film.

Lantern Cine-Club

Founded in 2015, Lantern Cine-Club has screened more than a hundred independent films and invited several directors—along with their film teams—to their screenings to share insight into the making of their works. Audiences are brought “on scene” as the creators share unforgettable anecdotes, bringing the action on screen to life and offering new interpretations for viewing the work.

Blackfin

Blackfin Production is a production company focusing on the investment, production and distribution of art films and independent documentaries. Based in Beijing, Blackfin Production has branch offices in Hangzhou, Hong Kong, and Paris, responsible respectively for production, project development, and international sales and acquisition. For the past three years since its founding Blackfin has discovered several a range of promising directors. Their films have been selected by many international film festivals, including Kaili Blues (2015) by Bi Gan (winner of the Best Emerging Director and Special Mention for First Feature in Festival del film Locarno 2015, the Best New Director in Golden Horse Award 2015); Mr. Zhang Believes (2015) by Qiu Jiongjiong (selected at Sign of Life of Festival del Film Locarno); This Worldly Life (2015) by Zhai Yixiang (winner of the Best Feature Film at K26 of Filmfest Hamburg 2015, the Best Art Contribution at FIRST); Knife in the Clear Water (2016) by Wang Xuebo (winner of the New Currents Award in 21st Busan International Film Festival); and Free and Easy (2016) by Geng Jun (the Special Jury Award in Cinematic Vision in 2017 Sundance Film Festival.) Director Zhai Yixiang’s new film Mosaic Portrait won the Grand Prize million TWD award given at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Project Promotion (FPP), a Chinese-language films-matching platform designed to bring to the fore collaborative opportunities between filmmakers, investors and distributors, as well as to link regional industry professionals to the international film community.
