Hao Liang’s work is in constant pursuit of the meanings made explicit within traditional Chinese painting and attempts to rediscover the medium’s inherent problems evidenced as early as the Song and Yuan dynasties. From the perspective of the artist, the aesthetic theory of late Ming philosophers Wang Shizhen and Dong Qichang might hold the key to establishing an independent Chinese modernity and explain China’s suspended process of reformation. His works also explore the notions of time and space presented in the painting of the Ming and Qing dynasties, revealing its visual peculiarities as related to their worldview. His vision of the phenomenon and rules of modernized and westernized Chinese painting fuel discussion for the benefits and losses of this process and further reflect the practices of Wu Hufan, Fu baoshi, and Lu Yan.
Ni Gu Lu is an anthology narrating the tastes in painting and antiques of Ming dynasty scholar Chen Jiru. Regarded as an authority within his own time, Chen Jiru represents the core values of Chinese civilization during that era. Taking Ni Gu Lu as a starting point, Curator Sun Dongdong and Hao Liang will discuss their views on contemporary Chinese art in relation to more ancient practices and reflect on Hao Liang’s engagement with the history of Chinese painting.
