“New Artrends” Talk Series | Wen Ling: The Irreplaceable Everyday

2014.10.4
15:00-17:00

Conversation
Location:  UCCA Auditorium
Language:  In Chinese only

Through photography and painting, Wen Ling constructs a world that weaves together childhood memories and the realities of adult life. The artist depicts his everyday life with deliberately unprofessional composition and technique. In the series “One Day in My Life,” Wen depicts themes such as the torment of illness, the ambiguity of intimacy, and the routine life of a normal family.

In 2001 Wen Ling founded Ziboy.com, China’s first photoblog, where captured snapshots of everyday life—street scenes, classmates, dinners, outdoor concerts, and anything else that crossed his path. Ziboy.com became a visual record of activities for friends as well as an international audience, the first glimpse of an “average” Chinese lifestyle through the eyes of a local.

In both his photography and painting, Wen Ling invites audiences to pay closer attention to individual lives and interests instead of frameworks of narrative and logic. In this talk, curator Sun Dongdong and artist Wang Guangle, both friends of the artist, will discuss Wen Ling’s perspective on art and life.
