The "New Artrends” talk series highlights the work of young Chinese artists and invites discourse and debate. For this upcoming event, we’re delighted to have two young pioneers on the discussion panel, Lu Yang and Chen Tianzhuo. For them, "art" - far from any elitist, grandiose definition - is simply an expression and a thing they love to do. They create a provocative and punchy artistic style by indulging in different disciplines and schools of thought, and incorporating elements from music, cartoon, film, fashion and design.
The "Kimo" in the talk's title - “Kimo Milky Acid” - is Japanese, meaning disgusting. Lu Yang’s new work, “Kimokawa Cancer Baby,” describes a group of cancer babies with grotesque but nonetheless cute features. “Acid” is borrowed from the title of Chen Tianzhuo's solo exhibition in Star Gallery, and also reveals the artist's nonsensical humor. Lu and Chen, often described as controversial, value "extreme" expression even at the cost of unsettling audiences. But get to know them and you'll find they're actually goodhearted and harmless; the artists work hard with a light heart and sense of humor.
Young art writer Robin Peckham will join the two artists and add context to this discussion of crossover art.

Chen Tianzhuo, born in 1985, graduated from the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. Recent exhibitions and works include "Tianzhuo’s Acid Club" in Star Gallery, an outdoor installation for Art Beijing 2014. A collaboration with Shangguan Zhe resulted in the fashion series "Sankuanz 2013" and "Sankuanz 2014," which won over young fans at SH Fashion Week.
Lu Yang, born in 1984, graduated with a major in multimedia from the China Academy of Fine Arts. Her representative works include “Uterusman,” “Underwater Zombie Frog Ballet,” “Krafttremor,” and “The Cruel Electromagnetic Wave Above Absolute Zero,” which are set up as crazy scientific experiments humorously and bizarrely based on the artist’s long-time study of anatomy and biology.
