“Indian Highway” exhibiting artist Dayanita Singh’s work illuminates urban life, location and memory through photography. This is not an India of fantasy – there is no costume, exoticism or exaggerated spirituality. Instead, portraits of domestic life, relationships and communities emerge – her work often being distributed with a view to being taken home and shared. In this special artist-led migrant children’s workshop, Ms. Singh will guide children through her pieces in the Indian Highway exhibition, discussing setting, color and the ability for photography to capture mood and feeling. As a group, the children will then participate in a dedicated session focused on cities and environments as places of shared experiences and our ability to recognize and record it. The artist will work with the children to create pieces that each of them can take home.

The “Rainbow Journey” Migrant School Students’ Art Program was developed by the UCCA Education Team to support and expand educational opportunities for the children of migrant workers. Through art classes, workshops and interactions with artists, we hope to inspire children to have greater self-confidence and interest in art. UCCA is actively seeking collaborations with non-profit organizations, corporations, universities, and volunteers interested in supporting migrant school students and the “Rainbow Journey” project.
