In China, the continuity of tradition depends to a large degree on education and upbringing, that is to say, the teaching of classical literature and history in school and the unconscious conveyance of traditional values in school and family education. However, people are beginning to realize that education and upbringing are the most important means of developing innovation potential, while traditional methods such as the mere acquisition of “dead” yet easily testable knowledge, the teacher-centred approach to lessons, and the absolute authority of the teacher inhibit creativity.

In Europe, innovation is becoming an important objective of education on account of the crucial role it plays in economic competition. People are realizing that knowledge, although it may not have become more important in today's society, is becoming updated more quickly than ever, with the result that continuous lifelong learning is required in order to acquire new skills. The discussion is focussing on interdisciplinary education which combines teaching with real-life problems so people are prepared for economic and social activities in an innovative manner.

How much importance is attached to “creativity” and “innovation” in the education systems of Europe and China? What role is played by the teaching of tradition? How relevant is the fostering of creativity as an educational goal? Which factors in the education system prevent creativity from being fostered and which help foster it?
