While the first salon in our four-part series on “the future” explores individual expectations, the last salon will tackle the question of the collective future and associated images in the two societies. The “nation” concept continues to play a predominant role in the creation and development of collective images of the future, even though this increasingly competes with visions of a global community. However, the two societies show obvious differences in terms of expectations for their nations.

Even though there are nationalistic or anti-European political parties promoting national models for the future, generally speaking, there is a growing tendency for the more than five hundred million people in the European Union to be regarded – and to regard themselves – as members of a communal body within the global context. After all, the majority of larger-scale exercises or interventions relating to the subject of “the future” in politics, business, and society already take place on the basis of a European – rather than a national – framework for action. Such a transnational perspective is less common in China where, as far as the future of the nation is concerned, the focus seems to lie more on regaining a position as a leading world power.

How do such images of the future come about? How is the relationship between a “national” and “global” future viewed in the respective societies? In the last salon of this four-part series, we want to discuss the mechanisms that generate such images of the future and their effects on political decisions and the way the society in question views itself.
