The film depicts the lives of a father and his sons living in the mountainous region of Hunan province, as well as those of a mother and daughter a thousand miles away in Beijing. The director's lens draws close to the families' confusions as they try and fail to communicate their affection for one another, eliciting the expression of thoughts left unspoken.
