A Glimpse of Tang & Ao
Translated literally, Tang refers to “hall,” a space opening directly to the main doors, visible upon entry. It lies in contrast to Ao, a room that remains hidden, tucked away from sight. Tang represents the tangible: appearances, color, material, structure, and function. Ao represents the abstract: light, flow, and space. Ao also blends architecture and society, history and culture. Thus, Tang and Ao encompass all aspects of architecture.
UCCA invites Kris Yao to discuss how architects utilize concrete materials—bricks, tiles, wood, metal, and glass—to create spaces that tug at the heartstrings, exploring the history, culture, spirit of space, and humanity within architecture.
