By the end of 2013, the elderly population (age 60 or above) in China exceeded 202 million people, accounting for approximately 14.9% of the total population. China is accelerating into a moderate stage of aging. Grim realities of an aging population face each individual, family, and industry. Architects must respond by adapting to the particular physical and psychological needs of the elderly through designs that enable a more comfortable, happy, independent, and dignified living experience. As part of the House Living lecture series, UCCA invites Professor Zhou Yanmin from the Tsinghua University School of Architecture to discuss the current dilemma of China's aging population and its cross section with architecture. The lecture will highlight possible future trends for living environments better suited for the elderly.
