What role do artists play in society? Within a constantly changing social ideology and cultural context, how can contemporary art stimulate new thought and effective criticism? More importantly, art practice must retain its original creative impulse, one that precedes theory. Art is not science; it is not used to answer questions. Rather, it is used to discover and raise questions, and to be on the forefront of thought related to history and contemporary society.
Asia Triennial Manchester (ATM) has organized a series of workshops to complement their extensive artistic and curatorial program. This workshop will be co-moderator by UCCA Director Philip Tinari and ATM Chief Curator Jiang Jiehong. They will be joined by many Chinese artists to discuss practical issues in art-making, the cultural context of exhibitions, and translation in visual production and curatorial work.

Established in 2008, the Asia Triennial Manchester (ATM) is the only Asian Triennial outside Asia. ATM works with partners to commission world-class visual artists and stage a major exhibition across greater Manchester. Founded on principles of knowledge, exchange, and partnership, the third iteration, ATM14, will open on 26 September, 2014, and will be developed in collaboration with a range of arts partners across greater Manchester, including the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (CfCCA, formally the Chinese Arts Centre).
CfCCA’s ambition for this iteration of ATM is to stage the largest exhibition of Chinese contemporary art in the UK to date. The show will feature up to 30 major artists from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan exhibiting across five spaces in Manchester, including the UHC (Ultimate Holding Company) Art Space, the John Rylands Library, the MoSI (Museum of Science and Industry) 1830 Warehouse, the National Football Museum, and the CfCCA galleries.
