ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

UCCA Art Cinema kicks off a new iteration of the celebrated “Filmmaker in Focus” series in 2013 with filmmaker Lü Yue.

Born in 1957, Lü Yue is widely acknowledged as one of the most important cinematographers of the “Fifth Generation” of Chinese cinema. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for Zhang Yimou’s film Shanghai Triad (1995), and served as cinematographer for Feng Xiaogang’s hit of the year, Back to 1942 (2012). In the mean time, as a film director, his works glittered with the awareness of the auteur theory. From the early documentary Nujiang, La Vallée Perdue (1989) to his recently productions Thirteen Princess Trees (2006) and The Obscure (2006), his documentary/fictional cross-narrative and experiments on improvisation has casted a distinctive influence on today’s Chinese cinema. With full retrospective of his director works, UCCA Art Cinema presents talks and Q&A with Lü Yue, focusing on his experience in between major commercial productions and independent cinematic practice.
