The Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) invites writer, traveler, photographer, and contributor to the Chinese editions of Lonely Planet Ding Haixiao to join us for a conversation, where he will share stories about his journey far into Asia’s hinterlands in 2012 and 2013. During the trip, he went across India, Persia, Caucasia, the Mediterranean Sea, and Egyopt, which led the publication of an ambitious book on the history of Asia, told through the story of his personal journey and revolt against fate.

On the 44 million square-meter Asian continent, numerous lives propagate, and numerous stories are taking place. 217 days, 25,500 kilometers; Ding Haixiao travelled across the Asian hinterlands alone, a Nomadic walk that helped me complete his self-salvation. Through the strange ruins and ambiguous myths, he searched for the hoopoe—the kind of all birds—on top of the Mountain, like in The Black Book by Ferit Orhan Pamuk. Five years later, he returns with this thick volume and a smile.
