Born in Chengdu in 1943, David Diao has produced a body of work that speaks to the vagaries of formal aesthetics, art-historical consensus, personal circumstance, and geopolitical succession. Here through poetic leaps of imagination, UCCA connects these themes with filmic documents that speak to Diao's specific diasporic experience, works of both unabashed kitsch and academic rigor.

About the Film

Directed by Jin-ho Hur, A Good Rain Knows (2009) was originally intended as the second segment of Chengdu, I Love You, a transnational love story that, as the title suggests, is set in Chengdu. An atmospheric drama, A Good Rain Knows is featured in this screening series for its depictions of the city where David Diao was born—a theme found in his paintings on Da Hen Li House. The plot follows a young Korean businessman reunited with a former Chinese friend and love interest in post-earthquake Chengdu.
