Film Synopsis

Daughters of the Dust

1991, Julie Dash, 112 minutes

Daughters of the Dust is set in 1982 on an island off the southeast coast of America. A descendent of Africans brought over as slaves centuries ago, Vioia decides to leave this island despite the objection of her family’s clan leader. The film’s poetic imagery and magic realism highlight the conflict between tradition and modernism.
