About the Film

The Rocking Sky

Director: Zhang Zhaowei

Genre: Documentary

Country: China

Duration: 98 min

Language: Mandarin Chinese

The Rocking Sky is a film about the Chinese Air Force during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The story is told from the perspectives of three women: Xu Xilin, Lin Huiyin, and Qi Bangyuan. The film reassesses the impact the war had on the commoners by depicting the pain of watching loved ones battling in the skies, and witnessing family members die one by one. Although this is a historical documentary about war, it is closer to an epic poem about love and humanity.

Escaped

Directors: Jetske Spanjer, Ange Wieberdink

Genre: Documentary

Country: The Netherlands

Duration: 55 min

At the end of the Second World War, a French woman and a Dutch woman were imprisoned in a concentration camp in East Germany. With the allies’ armies approaching, the Nazis decided to evacuate the concentration camps, forcing prisoners to embark on what is now known as the death march. The two women managed to escape from the march with seven other women. The nine women managed to cross a hostile Germany in a week, and eventually reached the advancing American armies. Today, these women are around 90 years of age, and while they do not speak of this painful experience to their children and grandchildren, they have never forgotten it. This film was part of a special screening at the 2012 Taiwan International Documentary Biennial.

Collaborators

CNEX

In 2017, CNEX collaborates with a variety of screening organizations nationwide to present CNEX MOVIES, a brand new screening program. CNEX MOVIES organizes its screenings thematically, and aims to screen the most contemporary and relevant new films as well as excellent foreign films that have yet to be introduced to China. Apart from the basic information on each film, an introduction will be included before each screening, such that the audience will have a fuller understanding of the work’s background before viewing. After the screening, audience members are encouraged to discuss their thoughts and feelings on the film amongst themselves and give feedback to the directors. CNEX MOVIES looks forward to seeing you in various cities.
