ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

This month, Jiang Tao, an associate professor in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Peking University, will bring us the classical work ZiYe of Mr. Mao Dun.

A classic of Chinese Modern Literature, the novel ZiYe describes the social turbulence of 1930's China on a large scale, in which Mao Dun discusses the inner crisis of “The Magic City of Shanghai” by exploring the relationship between economics and desire. This time, let’s shift to another angle to appreciate this work and discover economics in literature.
