ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

In June and July, we will invite graphic designer Du Qin to give 4 workshops on Typography.

Typography has become the center of focus in the last two to three years inside and outside of the design profession in China. This is not surprising. Designing language, the physical rendering of the written text, is the essence of communication design and the ‘language’ of graphic design. Any commissioner or practitioner of design who has a deep understanding and is in real need of communication design, any user/reader who appreciates quality in textual information, would pay great attention to the form and function of typography. However, there has been a lack of systematic research and teaching of typography in China, due to the fact that we never see typography in itself as a profound and complete system, a ‘typographic universe’.
Graphic designer, researcher of typography and PhD candidate at Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) Du Qin will be leading two typographic research initiatives at UCCA, Typography x2 on June 3 and 10, 2012. This workshop will be part of an effort to establish a research framework for typography in China, and a dialogue on how to approach systemized typographic research and practices.

This session will be an investigation into the often ignored positioning and measuring systems of Chinese typography. Participants will conduct an in-depth research of these aspects of typography based on the provided literature, and transform the results of research into tools for analyzing and evaluating typography. You are required to bring a Laptop computer with Adobe In Design and Illustrator installed.
