ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

Doll In July, Thopdan Dorjee was invited to UCCA to discuss Norlha, a sustainable project on Tibetan pasture. Nowadays, yak wool handcrafts by nomads from Norlha workshop penetrate European and American luxury market, and Thopdan will relate Norlha stories.

In 2007, Norha Workshop was set up and employed and trained locals to work with dignity and produce high-end yak wool scarves for prestigious customers such as Hermes, Balmain, and etc. Nowadays, Norha Workshop is listed as a sustainable project which offered jobs to more than 100 herders, addressed issues concerning migrant workforce, improved pasture overgrazing situation and increased added value of Tibetan handicrafts.

Guest: Thopdan Dorjee (Norlha Beijing Representative)

Thopdan DORJEE was born in an ordinary peasant family in Hainan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province and nurtured by traditional Tibetan culture during childhood, who learned Tibetan by chanting sutras and went to school at school age. In 2005, Thopdan DORJEE graduated from Qinghai Normal University and served as teacher in a local national middle school, where he deeply realized that he lacked knowledge and other skills. In late 2005, Thopdan DORJEE alone went to Beijing for further study with life dreams and thirst for knowledge. In 2010, Thopdan DORJEE knew of Norlha through friend introduction and applied for Norlha Program for he was attracted by its exploration of sustainable development in Tibetan area and innovation in traditional Tibetan arts and crafts. Currently, Thopdan DORJEE work with all the staff of Norlha Program to create prospect in Tibetan area.
