ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

“Relieur” became a craft and career in Europe after the invention of printing techniques that made book publishing a practical possibility. In Japan, “relieur” is regarded as art: “the art of binding one unique book.” The relieurs wish to preserve their art for the future. Painter Ise Hideko was deeply impressed by this pride and passion.

She was not a sociable girl when she was young, so she chose drawing as her way to express herself. With her works, she opened a window to the world. She is quiet but powerful, and what’s more, she brings picture books to a higher stage of art, a unique achievement in itself.
