Introduction

Project 1:”Show the World – The Seven Examples of Contemporary Ethnic Handicraft Design Forum”

The rebuilding of Chinese contemporary life style, the connotation of Chinese contemporary spirit’s value, the industry of Chinese ethnic art’s inheritance and re-design…nowadays, these related topics have been paid much more attention and become more realistic. The Seven Examples of Contemporary Ethnic Handicraft Design forum is hosted by “Show the World” Culture-based Development Goodwill Action for Ethnics in China, together with Beijing International Design Week. Seven representatives who applied themselves to the career of Chinese contemporary ethnic handicraft design are invited to share their experiences and cases in the area. It will discuss from different angles, such as design, industry, sales, creative culture investment, practicant, media and public, about finding the new path to the sustainable development of modern ethnic handicraft design industry, as well as the interact between ethnic handicraft and modern design, based on the respect and heritage of ethnic art tradition.
“Show the World” has always been developing and protecting ethnic handicrafts and music culture. Two forums were held continuously and created great influence in the field. This year in 2012, “Show the World” cooperates with Beijing International Design Week once more. It is hoped that through the combination of heritage and modern design, the industry of Chinese ethnic handicraft would be restored and affected, meanwhile to change the life style and consumption concept of modern China.
The forum will use modern technology methods as live via internet and multi-media interaction to involve larger part of the public in the discussion and practice.

THONIK founding director Thomas Widdershoven will talk about this.

Lex Pott and Anne de Grijff are both participants of the exhibition Basic Instincts: Dutch fashion in context made by Premsela, The Netherlands Institute for Design and Fashion. At the UCCA Talks they will tell about their inspiration and design practice.

Project 7: Today’s design in Barcelona

Barcelona has a strong tradition in the design arena. Outstanding historic artists such as Gaudí, Miró, and contemporary designers as Mariscal and Claret Serrahima have made Barcelona stand out as one of the most creative cities of the world. More recently, successful events such as the Barcelona Design Week, the OFFF festival or the FAD awards as well the new creation of The Design Hub of Barcelona (the new Design Museum of the city) have fostered the perfect environment for the blossoming of a cluster of small and extremely clever young design studios. Today we are presenting a selection of these studios that represent a new generation that is taking over the stage of the design in our city.

Background

Architecture divides and connects spaces, the difference between being “open” or “closed” is merely a thin line in the design process. Architectural design is an integrated whole in terms of concept and technology, the philosophical concepts embedded in the buildings also have a lingering influence on people's lives, giving the buildings an openness for cross-cutting cooperation.

During September 30 – December 2, Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art (UCCA) will present the Yung Ho Chang+FCJZ: MATERIAL-ISM exhibition. During this time, UCCA will be collaborating with the Festarch International Architecture Festival by Abitare and Beijing Design Week, to show a series of programs under the theme of urban architecture culture.

“Open·Closed·Open” Architecture Culture Program includes a 3 part seminar (Construction and Design; Design and Contemporary Urban Culture; Design and Design), and 2 children’s workshops, with a one day “Journey to Architecture.”
We will explore and share with the public how architecture and design changes people's lives.
