Location:  UCCA Great Hall

Andreas Schmid is an artist and curator based and an expert in contemporary Chinese art in Berlin. Arriving in China in the 1980s, he studied Chinese art history, calligraphy, and calligraphic theory in Beijing and Hangzhou. At a time when Chinese artists were just beginning to explore the aesthetic and social potentials of contemporary visual art, Schmid’s contribution was invaluable to the nascent field. His 1991 research trip with Hans van Dijk resulted in the 1993 exhibition “China Avant-Garde: Counter-Currents in Art and Culture” in Berlin. As the first major exhibition of Chinese contemporary art in Europe, “China Avant-Garde” introduced contemporary Chinese art to the world. In 1997, Schmid curated the exhibition “Contemporary Photo Art from China” at Neuer Berliner Kunstverein.

In this guided tour, Schmid will discuss the ‘93 and ‘97 exhibitions as well as the art world of the time, the artists, and the influence of Hans van Dijk on Chinese contemporary art in the 1990s.
