UCCA is proud to present an artist talk between conceptual artist Adel Abdessemed and Yang Jiecang, on the subject of “The First Step” of Abdessemed’s life and his artistic practice. The talk will be moderated by Martina Köppel-Yang.

Adel Abdessemed (artist)

Adel Abdessemed was born 1971 in Constantine, Algeria. In 1994, due to political unrest in the country, he moved to Lyon, France, before relocating to Paris. His experiences have given him the opportunity to explore multiple identities and ideological positions. Within a wide range of media (drawing, video, photography, performance, and installation), Abdessemed transforms everyday materials and images into unexpected, charged, and sometimes shocking artistic declarations.

Yang Jiecang (artist)

Yang Jiecang was born in 1956 in Guangdong, and is a conceptual artist. He was featured in UCCA exhibition ”’85 New Wave”, as well as 1989 exhibitions, “China/Avant-Garde”, and “Magiciens de la Terre”. His works with Chinese ink painting, installation, performance, and video. His most noted work is the “100 Layers of Ink” series.

Martina Köppel-Yang

Martina Köppel-Yang is an art historian and curator based in Paris, France, and Heidelberg, Germany. She received her PhD in East Asian Art History and Sinology from the University of Heidelberg, Germany and has been involved in writing on and in curating contemporary Chinese art since the mid-1980s. She is the author of Semiotic Warfare: The Chinese Avant-garde 1979-1989 (Timezone 8, Hong Kong, 2003), a reference work on the Chinese Avant-garde of the 1980s.
