Location:  Auditorium
Language:  Chinese

In collaboration with the China Independent Animation Film Forum (CIAFF), the Ullens Center of Contemporary Art will be holding the press conference for the sixth CIAFF titled “Chromosome,” followed by a seminar discussing the development and direction of independent animation.

Independent animation has moved beyond the scope of the animation industry. There is barely any domestic independent animation production and distribution, and most of the ones that exist do so within independent productions. Currently the development of independent animation is challenged by the issue of promotion. Regardless of whether they gain the attention of audiences or monetary profits, they all need an established understanding of production and circulation. On the occasion of the sixth CIAFF, the guests will together explore China’s independent animation, as well as its distribution and development by drawing lessons from art films, their distribution models, and commercial animation. They will discuss the current situation of the Chinese independent animation industry with art film producers, commercial animation directors, independent animation directors, scholars, and others who work at art house theaters and institutions.

Collaborator

The China Independent Animation Film Forum

The China Independent Animation Film Forum is the first non-profit animation project created by an NGO in Mainland China. It was founded by independent animation director Pi San in 2011. The current Art Director is Yi Yuxiao. In 2015, CIAFF established a curatorial system, where curators are each in charge of planning a forum. The theme of the 6th CIAFF is “Chromosome,” and is curated by Liu Shuliang and Xiao Jian. The CIAFF will be held in October in Beijing. Finalists will be screened during the forum, and compete for the final prize.

For the past six years, the CIAFF has always sought to encourage the creation of principles and standards that can support independent animation. By October 2016, the organization received a total of 2000 entries from more than 50 colleges and universities at home and abroad for the contest. There were 204 works that qualified, and ultimately 21 winners. The CIAFF will be reporting on and promoting this year’s finalists, who will also be recommended to participate in famous domestic and international animation festivals, exhibitions, and exchanges, and collaborate with institutions and businesses.
