About

Location:  Long Gallery

Marcel Duchamp's Boîte-en-valise, a self-produced retrospective consisting of miniature reproductions of his key works, is a touchstone of contemporary art. In this exhibition, the valise is shown for the first time in Beijing with additional context provided by related works and a special selection of works by Chinese artists connected to this masterpiece. Taking its title from the subtitle of the boîte-en-valise itself ("From or by Marcel Duchamp or Rrose Selavy"), this exhibition is both the most comprehensive exhibition of Duchamp's work ever mounted in China, as well as an investigation into his lingering influence on the development of contemporary art in China. The exhibition includes works and pieces of archival material by and about Duchamp, as well as works by 17 Chinese artists.

For more information, please read the "DUCHAMP and/or/in CHINA" press release.

News

" If you are a big fan of Marcel Duchamp, known as ‘the father of modern art’, then be sure to visit Beijing’s 798 Art District as the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art presents a large amount of the French-American painter's work on Friday. The exhibition, in partnership with the Institut Francais de Chine, is the fanciest show of Duchamp's artwork in China to date.”

—People’s Daily & China Daily

“So when the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) in Beijing announced that it would be hosting DUCHAMP and/or/in CHINA, an exhibition highlighting some of Duchamp's original work on the Chinese mainland for the first time ever, for art lovers it should be very big deal indeed.”
