『New Limited Edition』

Cui Xiuwen’s New Limited Edition  at UCCASTORE

“ONE DAY IN 2004”

“SANJIE”is a composite art work created with three methods - oil painting, photograph, and video. The subject is the same: a young Chinese girl, wearing red scarf (symbol of a member of Young Pioneer Group), playing the thirteen figures of the Last Supper. It took me nearly a year to complete the work, but the deliberation process took years before that. The oil painting was completed the first. During the Chinese new year of 2003, I took quite a lot of pictures and stayed at home doing the painting. When the painting was done, SARS had come an epidemic. Ignoring the warnings, I went out frequently and finally completed the photograph and video part of the production in September 2003. Red scarf, white shirt, they signify the period from the 1950s all the way to 1970s. Indeed, the symbols remain powerful to this day.

To me, red scarf represents a period in my memory, a mark of belonging to a certain generation, the desire to gain honor, the exciting and yet unsettling sentiment of being urged on by the martyrs who created the People’s Republic, and even more so, the doubt and quest to identify the relationship between individual and group. The white shirt was always so white, white even in dreams, and yet it also created the pressure that was not exactly so white and pure. The color of history is fading, people age, memory becomes vague and unreliable. In the Last Supper, people always ask which one is Judas. I believe that Judas is each and everyone of us. As I grow older, I know more clearly that people can be naïve and simple as they can be, and as complicated as they can be.

Lin Jian’s New Limited Edition “Hero No.2” is coming at UCCASTORE

At the end of 2009, the artist Ling Jian returned to Beijing from Germany, holding exhibitions of his new works that brought him back into the focus of the Chinese contemporary art world. The portraits, representative of his work, act as metaphors for contemporary Chinese material culture and awareness of consumerist development. UCCA Art Store is now launching a new limited edition based on the Ling Jian’s year 2007 oil painting “Hero No.2”.

“They are open and self-confident. They have some sorrow appearance in their looks and eyes, that’s a kind of feeling between expression and secret, which makes them seem to have experienced everything. It’s unexplainable.”(Linjian)

Peng Wei’s New Limited Edition is coming at UCCASTORE

Peng Wei’s process for producing art adopts an attitude of “looking back.”By reaching into forms of dress within traditional culture, she meditates on the past and penetrates the elapsed time and space of a vanished life. Being far off from reality allows her art to maintain the microscopic details of her emotions, making apparent the substance and mystery of the ink painting itself. From her individual experiences, she tailors fragments of historical clothing to express her memories and loves. Even though there is no concrete figural imagery, there seems to be a shadow outlined on the silk to echo and construct an “alienation effect.” Within the sentimental yearning for the past, there is a search for the longing and freedom found in dreams, from which emerges a style that is at once sad and beautiful, feminine and gentle.

Yang Fudong’s New Limited Edition  at UCCASTORE

Yang Fudong’s work is characterized by incorporating multiple visual senses and emotional effects, juxtaposing modern life experiences and ancient legends and transforming them into visual language. These familiar contexts and characters express the anxiety and wandering of the artist’s generation, becoming a microcosm of culture and values for this social background. Using classic film aesthetics and techniques, the artist creates extreme characters and environments. From An Estranged Paradise to No Snow on the Broken Bridge and from East of Que Village to Dawn Mist, the artist is a visual recorder of literature, giving each plot a unique interpretation.

Ms. Huang at M last night depicts a dinner party at a restaurant where wine flows free. These scenes, seeming to come from old fashion Shanghai, are betrayed by their crisp modernity, like images taken from film stills. The breaks in the plot bring unlimited space for reverie to the films’ striking visuals. It is these unknown and untouched states that the artist consistently pursues.

This collaboration between UCCAStore and Yang Fudong will bring a new Limited Edition photograph to fans of Chinese contemporary art and art collectors.

Known for his photographs and films, Yang Fudong has been active in a number of art exhibitions in China and abroad since the late 1990s. He has participated in many highly regarded art shows, including the 40th Art Basel Art Fair and the 52th Venice Biennale. In early 2010, in collaboration with internationally renowned luxury brand Prada, the artist shot the black and white film The First Spring. Dawn Mist, the artist`s newest work, is currently on exhibit in Breaking Forecast: 8 Key Figures of China`s New Generation Artists at Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, 798 Art District, Beijing. This work was also recently exhibited at Zendai Museum of Modern Art, Shanghai, 2009.
