In conjunction with the current exhibition “Zhao Bandi: China Party,” the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) is pleased to invite the public to a painting party on Saturday afternoon. After a guided tour from UCCA docents through the exhibition hall, participants will enter the Atrium to collaborate in creating murals inspired by the exhibition. A glass of refreshing Jing A beer in hand, attendees can mingle with other guests to discuss the exhibition, or grab a brush and directly begin painting. The party is open to all, regardless of artistic experience, and the event and final murals are intended to mirror both the exhibition title, and Zhao Bandi’s own multifaceted understanding of reality.
“Zhao Bandi: China Party”, running from 5 August to 22 October at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA), is the artist’s first institutional solo show within China. The exhibit covers a 30 year span of the artist’s career, featuring works in different mediums ranging from painting to fashion design. For Zhao, social development is a hybrid process, which he has described as “a fantastic party” that conflates the joys and sorrows of life. This exhibition highlights a practice that, rooted in a long tradition of social realism, has shown a unique ability to confound the distinction between truth and fiction.
