On the opening weekend of “Zhao Bandi: China Party,” French art critic and curator Henry Périer presents an overview of Zhao Bandi’s career and his works included in the current exhibition. The audience will then be invited to engage in a Q&A session with Périer. Attendees will be given the opportunity to engage in an open dialogue with a curator well acquainted with both Zhao Bandi and his work.
“Zhao Bandi: China Party”, running from August 5th to October 22nd at UCCA, is the artist’s first institutional solo show within China. The exhibition attempts to outline nearly three decades of the artist’s practice and presents more than a dozen of his works and projects from 1987 to the present. The included works span fashion design, video, film, performance, and painting. For Zhao, social development is a hybrid process, which he has described as “a fantastic party” that conflates the joys and sorrows of life. This exhibition highlights a practice that, rooted in a long tradition of social realism, has shown a unique ability to confound the distinction between truth and fiction.

Henry Périer (Art Critic, Curator)
Henry Périer is a French art critic and independent curator, with a PhD in art history. He is the biographer of Pierre Restany, the French art critic and founder of the New Realism movement (Arman, César, Raymond Hains, Yves Klein, Niki de Saint-Phalle, Jacques Villeglé, etc.). From 2003 to 2004, Périer was curator of the exhibition “China, the body everywhere?” held at Museum of Contemporary Art of Marseille, France, in 2004, which included 39 Chinese contemporary artists, such as Zhang Xiaogang, Wang Guangyi, Yue Minjun, Fang Lijun, and Yang Shaobin. In collaboration with Guy Pieters Gallery, Périer curated the Zhao Bandi Fashion Show at the Palais de Tokyo in 2009. Périer was the scientific advisor for the Zeng Fanzhi retrospective at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, on view from October 2013 to February 2014.
