Hugoeast Screening: Scene One

In order to promote more cultural exchange between China and abroad through film, the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) collaborates with Beijing Hugoeast Media Co. Ltd to present a series of screenings of new foreign art house films, with a different theme for each month. The theme for September is “Scene One.” The four selected films are all almost entirely shot in a singular location. The narration provides the audience an intense experience, and births infinite possibilities within the limited space.

Simple Little Lives

It is the night of the harvest moon, and there’s an all-night celebration around a campfire. The young guests start arriving at sunset and begin binge drinking. Although Abe and Hank were brought up as brothers, they have grown to mistrust each other. When Abe arrives with a sleek looking New York City hipster/musician type named Carter, son of a Wall Street shark who is despised and hated by the locals, it sets the stage for conflict and revenge that will change the lives of those involved forever. Simmering tensions within the group ignite an age-old feud.

Anna and Juhan begin to pretend they own the house, engaging their guests in a game of domination that propels their relationship to the brink of destruction.

Arthur is the top employee at his collecting firm. He’s got a high income and a solid reputation among his colleagues. He risks losing it all at once because of a scandalous video that hits the web. In one instant he becomes the main target of journalists and gossip columnists. His colleagues and friends turn away from him, and is threatened by strangers. The video, which was purposely fabricated to set him up, becomes the truth, while the truth he’s trying to tell is perceived as a lie. Arthur is trapped inside his office alone against the world. His main enemy, the author of the video, turns out to be a widow who is convinced that it was Arthur who drove her husband to suicide. She’s going to do everything in her power to drive him off the deep end.

Hugoeast has also introduced Félicité and Summer 1993 into China, which have won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize and the GWFF Best First Feature Award at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival respectively.
