ABOUT THIS PROGRAM

UCCA Art Cinema in collaboration with the Austrian Film Forum will show 6 outstanding films from Austria. Throughout the week, films of various styles and subjects will show the highlights of 20th century Austrian film culture.

We are particular excited to screen Joyless Street, 1925. The film was recently repaired by the Austrian Film Forum and is lauded as one of top 10 classical silent movies of all time.

Lourdes by Jessica Hausner, winner of the Brian Prize at the 66th Venice International Film Festival, is one of three feature films by female directors to be shown in this program.

The Robber, 2010 was nominated three awards at the Austrian Diagonale Film awards in 2011. The film received awards for best direction, best actor and best sound. Stylistically the film style is clean and slow-paced and the restrained dialogue heightens focus upon the atmosphere and emotion through the body language and face expressions of the actors.

Benny's Videos, 1992 a tense thriller by Michael Haneke, who in recent years has become one of the hottest international filmmakers, won the FIPRESC award at the 1993 European Film awards.

We feed the world 2005, directed by Ewin Wagenhofer, examines international food production and mass farming. The film is most successful Austrian documentary to date.

Atmen (Breathing) 2011, directed by Karl Markovics was awarded the Label Europa Cinemas prize at the Cannes International Film festival 2011.

We will also be screening a series of Ars Electronica short movies before each feature film.

Film Synopses

Die freudlose Gasse (Joyless Street)

Georg Wilhelm Pabst, 148min, 1925, Austria

This is one of 10 classical silent movies in the European film history. No matter The film's director, editor or the actors Greta Garbo who after becoming the Hollywood star, as well as Central Europe's film star Asta Nielsen, Werner Krauss, were all the foundation for the success of this movie.

In 1921 in the poor part of an Austrian town called Melchiorgasse there are only two wealthy people: the butcher Josef Geiringer and his wife. Mrs. Greifer runs a fashion boutique and a nightclub patronized by wealthy Viennese. Annexed to the nightclub is Merkl Hotel, a brothel to which the women of the nightclub bring their clients. The film follows the lives of two women from the same poor neighborhood as they try to better themselves during the period of Austrian postwar hyperinflation. They are Marie, who becomes a prostitute, and Grete who does not.

At the finale Else kills the butcher because he will not give her meat. The poor of the neighborhood, hearing the sounds of the nightclub, revolt against the clients by throwing stones. The nightclub burns down killing two beggars. Only Grete seems to have any hope of leaving Melchiorgasse and this because of her relationship with an American Red Cross officer.

Bennys Video

Michael Haneke, 105min, 1992, Austria

Benny’s Video is an Austrian film from the early nineties that seeks to demonstrate the dehumanizing effect that violence in the media can have on society as a whole. Michael Haneke’s fictional universe is a universe where casual violence just happens, without cause or reward – there’s almost always a consequence but it’s rarely shown in any detail, making it an ambiguous moral wasteland where nobody is ever very happy or engaged with their surroundings, and most people feel the need to commit hideous acts of violence towards each other to just feel anything at all.
